Autism Training:

Advance Autism training is essential training when working with people with Autism Spectrum Disorders. This training is mandatory and provides the skills and knowledge required to support people with Autism, exploring in-depth the characteristics, and theories of autism and successful intervention approaches.

This training is delivered in a way the support staff members understand Autism Spectrum Disorders through the eyes of an autistic person.

Training is usually provided by the internal trainers (Behavioural specialist and skills developmental coordinator) and is tailored around our client’s characteristics and needs, and is specific to each individual we support.

Different topics around Autism Spectrum Disorders are discussed in our training, such as:

Challenging behaviour Training:

This external accredited course is an introduction to Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) theory and a supportive space to develop specific supporting strategies. This course gives participants a strong foundation of understanding of the causes and functions of challenging behaviour and equip them with the necessary skills to successfully support individuals whose behaviour challenges, based upon a PBS framework.

This theoretical and practical training is essential for our staff who work directly with an individual with challenging behaviour. It provides practical strategies to prevent and deescalate challenging behaviour.

Communication and Visual aids Training:

An externally accredited level 2 course, is designed for everyone who might benefit from an understanding of communication of people on the autism spectrum, including parents, front line care staff, professionals and anyone who has contact with individuals on the spectrum.

This advanced course focuses on understanding communication and on equipping the participants to develop visual aids to facilitate communication of people in the autism spectrum.

Our staff need to adapt their communication to the individual they support as well as making sure the information is understood. This course offer the opportunity to develop receptive and expressive communication skills to put in practice in the service and with the individual with ASD.

MAPA (Management of Actual or Potential Aggression) Training:

Salisbury Support 4 Autism, utilises a BILD accredited MAPA® programme, which delivers comprehensive training that teaches management and intervention techniques to cope with escalating behaviour in a professional and safe manner. The programme delivers a solid foundation based on the philosophy of providing the best Care, Welfare, Safety, and SecuritySM for staff and those in our care that:

  • Focuses on prevention, deceleration and avoidance.
  • Addresses the risks of physical interventions.
  • Teaches safe, non-harmful interventions.
  • Offers proven post-incident strategies to prevent future crises.


Salisbury Support 4 Autism has a robust system in place in regards to the use of restrictive physical intervention, which follows the guidance of Positive and Proactive Care: reducing the need for restrictive interventions (DoH, 2014), NICE guidance-NG11 – Prevention and Intervention for people with learning disabilities whose behaviour challenges and NICE Guidance – QS101- Learning Disabilities: Challenging Behaviour. These reports identify actions that will improve people’s quality of life which should then reduce the need for restrictive interventions. It sets out ways to know who is responsible for making these improvements, including effective governance, transparency and monitoring.
